## When to use this student motivation survey

A student can care about a topic and still doubt that they can succeed. Another may feel confident but see little reason to invest effort. Ask about these experiences separately, early enough to adjust the unit. Use the feedback to open a teaching conversation rather than label students as motivated or unmotivated.

## Distinguish interest, confidence, and personal relevance

Keep the survey tied to one named unit students have already begun. Ask what they want to learn, how useful the material feels, and how confident they are about the upcoming work. These answers serve different decisions and should remain separate.

Hulleman and Harackiewicz’s 2009 randomized high-school science study found that a relevance-writing intervention “increased interest in science and course grades for students with low success expectations” (abstract, page 1410). Their [science relevance study ](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19965759/)supports paying attention to students’ own connections and expectations. The intervention involved writing activities over a semester; answering this short survey is not the same intervention and does not promise improved grades. The questions below are original, not a validated motivation scale.

## Interpret the student motivation responses

Compare interest and confidence as two separate distributions. High interest with low confidence may call for a clearer worked example or an approachable first step. Confidence with low perceived usefulness may suggest inviting students to explore different applications. Treat these as ideas to discuss, not diagnoses or guaranteed solutions.

Read the written connections before deciding which examples to include. Group the support choices and final comments, then explain one realistic change the class will see. Keep “Not sure yet” visible: it may reflect limited exposure to the unit rather than disengagement. Do not add the answers into one motivation score or use the replies to predict ability. If you ask again later, record changes to the unit and respondent group; a difference between two voluntary snapshots cannot by itself establish that the teaching change caused it.

### How is motivation different from engagement in this survey?

This form asks about reasons to learn, expected success, and personal relevance. An engagement survey focuses more on what students do, such as participating, working with peers, or setting aside study time.

### Should students receive a motivation score?

No. These original questions are intended for practical teaching feedback. Combining them into an unvalidated score could hide different needs and wrongly label students.

### When should the teacher send the survey?

Use it after students have encountered a named unit but while there is still time to adjust examples or support. Avoid asking before students know what the unit involves.
