Ask voters about a choice they have already made. This SurveyLegend exit poll template provides seven optional questions for a neutral post-vote research project.

An exit poll is a survey of participating voters, not the election itself. Define the contest and sampling approach before collecting answers, and keep participation separate from voting.

## When to Use This Template

Use this questionnaire only within a planned research process after the person has voted. Describe the election, contest, independent organizer and intended use of findings. A public website link alone does not create a representative exit poll; an appropriate sampling design is a separate requirement.

## 7 Exit Poll Questions

This voluntary poll concerns the named election and contest after you have voted. It is not an official ballot and does not change your vote. You may skip any question. Do not provide your name, address, ballot photograph or information that identifies another voter. Results describe survey participation unless a qualified research design supports broader estimates.

## How to Adapt the Questionnaire

Name one contest and keep open-choice wording neutral. Establish how genuine candidate or option names will be coded, including write-ins and nonanswers. Do not add names or contact fields to this version. Verify location permissions, timing and any applicable reporting restrictions through the responsible election authority before fieldwork. No automated branching is included: people who have not voted can skip later questions and are excluded from post-vote analysis.

## When to Ask

Approach selected participants only after they have finished voting and without obstructing access. Follow a declared sampling and invitation procedure rather than choosing people who look approachable. SurveyLegend's [survey bias ](https://www.surveylegend.com/online-survey/survey-bias/)guide explains why who responds can change conclusions. The questionnaire alone does not cover early, mail or other voters absent from the sampled locations.

## How to Use the Responses

Use Q1 to define the post-vote analysis group. Preserve blank, refused and no-contest-vote responses separately. Code written choices against the actual contest without guessing ambiguous entries. Record invitations and refusals in a separate nonidentifying fieldwork log, not as invented answers. Report location and time coverage and any weighting method; do not derive a margin of error from convenience responses. Wait-time responses describe participants' experiences, not verified misconduct. Never announce a winner or official count from the template demo.

## What the Research Adds

René Bautista's 2015 dissertation abstract notes that, in exit polling, “the population being sampled is fleeting.” It examines both nonresponse and measurement error using linked survey and fieldwork information and statistical modeling. This supports keeping the invitation process and missing participation visible instead of treating collected answers as the whole electorate. The dissertation does not validate this seven-question form or supply its weighting. Read the [exit polling dissertation ](https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/sramdiss/8/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is this an official ballot?

No. It is a voluntary research questionnaire after voting. A response does not cast, change or verify an official vote.

### Does an online link make the poll representative?

No. Coverage, selection, nonresponse and analysis require a research design. An open link can attract a very different group from the electorate.

### Can respondents leave their choice blank?

Yes. Every question is optional. Keep refusal, skipped and no-contest-vote answers distinct during analysis.

## Printable Exit Poll

Print the exact election and contest heading, optional questions and all choices. Supply a private completion and return method appropriate to the approved fieldwork process. No names, addresses, signatures or ballot photographs. Paper responses are research records, not official ballots. Paper responses need separate review or manual entry; they are not automatically added to online results.
