This electricity usage survey asks adults about household appliance routines during one week, including when laundry and dishwashing happen and what limits changes in timing. Use it to understand routines, not to calculate electricity consumption.

Meter data can show when electricity is used, but it does not necessarily explain the household routine behind it. This SurveyLegend questionnaire collects that context. It asks about appliance use and flexibility without requesting bills, meter identifiers, account details or a promise to change behavior.

When to use this survey

Use the questionnaire in an early household research or community engagement exercise. Invite one knowledgeable adult per household and identify the same seven-day period for everyone. If you are reviewing enrollment or support in an existing initiative, the energy program template covers that separate task.

7 questions for your electricity usage survey

Think about your household's appliance routines during the seven dates shown above. Answer only what you know and use not sure when needed. All questions are optional. Do not include an address, account number, meter identifier or details of when your home is empty.

Customize your electricity usage survey

Define morning, afternoon, evening and overnight with non-overlapping time bands suited to the project, and show the same definitions to everyone. Keep broad timing optional. Include households without the appliances; excluding them would hide an important difference in circumstances. Avoid leading questions such as “Why do you waste electricity at peak times?” No answer in this template establishes waste.

How to use the answers

Report timing and flexibility alongside respondent familiarity and appliance nonuse. Keep unknown answers separate rather than treating them as zero usage. A common evening routine may reflect caring or work constraints; it is not by itself evidence of high consumption or avoidable cost. Summarize information requests and use them to choose a follow-up research question. Any comparison with meter data would require a separate, appropriate data-collection arrangement; this survey does not perform that linkage or estimate savings.

Research connection: Trotta and colleagues’ 2023 Aalborg University report describes research on “everyday practices and flexibility related to electricity use” in its abstract. The household electricity report distinguishes questionnaire information from measured consumption data. SurveyLegend applies that distinction by asking about routines and constraints while making no consumption calculation. The report describes a Danish research design, not a demonstrated saving from taking a survey, and this short questionnaire is an original adaptation.

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculate a household's electricity consumption?

No. Broad routines do not provide kilowatt-hours. Consumption requires appropriate measurement data.

Should every household member answer?

Invite one adult who knows the household's routines for this version. Multiple answers about the same household could be counted twice unless the research design handles that deliberately.

Does reported flexibility mean someone will change their routine?

No. Perceived choice is not a commitment, and practical constraints may change. Discuss feasible next steps without assuming a particular schedule is possible or advisable.
