A friendship survey helps you learn how people prefer to stay connected and what gets in the way of spending time together. Use these seven optional questions to plan a practical opportunity for adult friends to meet or catch up.

A long conversation, a shared walk and a quick message serve different purposes. Ask which forms of connection people actually want before planning another group activity. Create the questionnaire in SurveyLegend and keep participation voluntary.

When to Use This Template

Use this version for an adult social group or community program planning ways to maintain friendships. It asks about opportunities and preferences, not whether someone is a good friend. Avoid collecting names of friends or making individual responses visible to the group.

7 Friendship Survey Questions

Think about contact with friends during the past four weeks. Every question is optional. Do not name or rate another person. Answers will help plan optional opportunities to connect, and choosing no activity is welcome.

How to Adapt the Questionnaire

Name the adult group and the four-week period. Replace activity options with feasible, accessible choices and keep a no-activity response. Use open-ended questions to hear what “worthwhile” means to participants instead of assuming that everyone wants more social time. Explain whether answers are anonymous or only reviewed by a coordinator.

When to Ask

Ask before selecting the next month's activity and leave enough notice to act on the preferred planning window. Avoid repeatedly surveying people who have declined further invitations. A response is a planning preference, not an RSVP.

How to Use the Responses

Read the preferred activity alongside barriers, group size and notice. A low recent-contact frequency does not establish loneliness or a poor friendship. Keep different preferences visible rather than presenting the majority choice as everyone's need. Offer one feasible option and ask separately whether people want to attend.

What the Research Adds

Hall's study, first published online in 2018, examined friendship through “hours together, shared activities, and everyday talk.” Read the study . Its two samples linked time together with closeness, informing this template's separate contact and activity questions. It does not establish a required number of hours for friendship or validate these planning questions.

Frequently asked questions

Can this rank who is the best friend?

No. It asks about connection opportunities and preferences, not the worth of another person.

Does infrequent contact mean a friendship is weak?

Not necessarily. Frequency alone does not explain relationship quality, circumstances or what each person wants.

Should the group see individual answers?

Explain the actual privacy arrangement first. Share broad planning themes and avoid details that identify a participant.
