What is a Financial Advisor Annual Review Survey?

A financial advisor annual review survey gathers feedback about one review meeting and its follow-up. It should measure the communication experience while account data, suitability decisions and regulated profile updates remain in the firm's secure approved systems.

When to use this template

Use this template soon after an annual review to identify communication and process improvements. It is not a financial-planning questionnaire or suitability assessment. Any change to goals, risk profile or account instructions must follow the firm's regulated workflow.

Seven optional questions

Use these seven questions as a focused starting point. Every question is optional. The template is original editorial content, not a validated scale or financial assessment.

How to adapt it

Use the firm's exact name for the annual review and secure profile-update route. Remove any choice that does not match the real meeting process. Keep the survey response separate from transaction instructions, and have compliance, privacy and accessibility specialists review the implementation for the relevant jurisdiction. Review sensitive questions and open-ended analysis before launch.

How to interpret responses

First separate the goal-update signal from experience ratings; a “yes” or “not sure” should trigger the firm's approved follow-up process rather than an automated account change. Review agenda, explanations, question opportunity, priority alignment and next-step clarity as distinct process dimensions. Code the final answer into topics such as preparation, plain language, time for questions or follow-up, and never infer investment suitability from survey scores.

Thompson and colleagues compared elicited client risk profiles with portfolio selections in data covering more than 50,000 accounts, 27,000 clients and 300 advisors at a Canadian financial dealership. The abstract describes checking how well a portfolio “aligns with their stated goals”. That supports a goal-update signal, but the paper's value-at-risk method does not validate this meeting-feedback survey. See Thompson et al. .

Frequently asked questions

Can this survey update a client's financial profile?

No. A survey response can flag a need for follow-up, but profile, risk and account changes must use the firm's secure regulated process.

Should clients enter balances or holdings?

No. Keep financial account data out of the feedback survey and direct clients to the approved secure channel.

Can low ratings prove unsuitable advice?

No. They identify communication and process issues for review; suitability requires regulated evidence and professional assessment.
