Commuting Survey Template
Learn how employees travel to work and what makes the journey difficult. This commuting survey collects travel frequency, main transport mode, journey time, and useful support options for workplace planning.
Two people can use the same transport mode and have very different journeys. Ask about time and predictability as well as how they travel. That helps a workplace team identify support that matches the problem.
When to use this commuting survey
Use this template to plan workplace travel support for employees who work at a named site. It refers to a typical working week during the past month. SurveyLegend helps collect the experience behind transport choices without requesting home addresses.
For work trips beyond the regular commute, use business travel feedback.

How to customize your commuting survey
State the site clearly for employees who visit several locations. Define one-way, door-to-door travel time so replies are comparable. Keep remote workers' no-commute responses visible. Do not infer why someone uses a mode or pressure them to choose an option that is impractical for their circumstances.
Before sharing, try the questionnaire with a few intended respondents and clarify anything they interpret differently.
Use SurveyLegend's instructions for respondents to clarify that travel time means one-way, door-to-door time for the named site.
Printable commuting survey template
Use this printable commuting survey template at a worksite where some employees prefer an offline way to respond. It gives people who prefer paper or are less comfortable online another way to respond. Include the same context, questions, and answer choices as the online version. Tell respondents where to return it and who will review it. Paper answers need separate review or manual entry; they are not automatically added to online responses.

How to use the answers
Compare satisfaction within travel-time groups as well as by mode, and inspect unpredictability alongside comments. Count no-commute responses separately. Use support preferences to select a feasible pilot and ask again after a meaningful change. These fields are not sufficient to calculate travel emissions.
See SurveyLegend's guide to reviewing exported responses to keep travel mode, time, and satisfaction together when comparing groups.
A commuting study in Ghent found that journey duration helped explain differences in satisfaction between transport modes. That is why this template asks about both time and mode instead of treating the vehicle alone as the explanation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I ask for employees' home addresses?
This version does not need them. Broad travel experience is enough for the planning questions covered here.
How should remote workers answer?
They can select zero commuting days and the no-commute choices, then skip fields that do not apply.
Can this calculate a carbon footprint?
No. It lacks the detailed distance, vehicle, occupancy, and emissions assumptions needed for that calculation.
