What makes finding a rental home difficult? This SurveyLegend questionnaire focuses on search channels, information, and obstacles before someone becomes a resident.

A resident survey starts after the move. A rental search survey can also hear from people still looking or who paused their search. That matters when you want to improve housing information rather than evaluate a property manager.

When to Use This Template

Use this questionnaire to improve a rental listing service, housing information program, or local outreach project. Include people who did not find a home. For a broader discussion of local service priorities, SurveyLegend's community needs survey serves a different purpose.

7 Rental Housing Search Survey Questions

Think about your most recent search for a rental home during the past six months. If you are still searching, describe your experience so far. Every question is optional. Do not include names, exact addresses, income records or private application details. This questionnaire is feedback, not a rental application or request for urgent housing assistance.

How to Adapt the Questionnaire

Define the area and eligible adult audience in the invitation. Keep the same six-month recall window and let active searchers answer. Offer an offline response route if your outreach would otherwise miss people with limited internet access. Do not use this feedback as tenant screening. For wording around costs and applications, review SurveyLegend's sensitive questions guidance and retain the option to skip.

When to Ask

Invite people while the search is recent. If recruiting through a successful tenancy list alone, state that unsuccessful and paused searches are missing. Contact people through more than one relevant channel when feasible and record how recruitment shaped the responses.

How to Use the Responses

Separate completed, active and paused searches before looking at duration. An active search lasting three months is not a completed three-month search. Count which channels and barriers respondents report, and read requested improvements alongside listing clarity. Unclear costs may justify revising listing fields; difficulty arranging viewings may justify checking scheduling information. The sample does not establish the local shortage rate, prove discrimination or show that respondents chose their constraints. Report who answered and which searchers may be absent.

What the Research Adds

Maria Krysan's 2008 study examines “the housing search process itself” using a 2004 probability sample of 734 African American and white householders in metropolitan Detroit. The abstract distinguishes strategies, experiences, and search locations. This template borrows that separation of questions, not the study's questionnaire or racial comparisons. The historical regional findings cannot establish today's local market conditions. Read the housing search study .

Frequently asked questions

Can someone answer if they have not found a home?

Yes. Active and paused searches are essential parts of this questionnaire. Analyze their duration separately from completed searches.

Is this a rental application?

No. It collects feedback about searching. It does not collect verification documents, reserve housing or determine tenant eligibility.

Does a high cost-barrier response measure affordability?

It identifies a reported obstacle among respondents. It is not an affordability index or a population estimate without a separate design and suitable data.
