Review the member experience, not just renewal intent
A member can renew without using many benefits, or participate actively while still finding communication difficult. This template keeps recent benefit use, fulfilled needs, communication, support, and future participation separate. That makes the feedback easier to act on than one overall satisfaction question. Browse related nonprofit templates when the task concerns donors, volunteers, programs, or community needs.
When to use this member survey
Use the survey for a professional association, club, chamber, alumni group, cooperative, or membership nonprofit after a defined 12-month period. It reviews current-member experience; it does not process renewals or predict who will leave. Use member interest questions when planning future programs and formats, and volunteer satisfaction when the experience belongs to a volunteer role.

Adapt the survey to the membership model
Replace the benefit list with benefits members can actually use, but keep “I did not use any” separate from missing answers. Define membership and the 12-month period in the introduction. If chapters, membership levels, or career stages receive meaningfully different benefits, collect only the grouping needed for analysis and protect small groups from identification. Provide an open suggestion form for ideas that arise between scheduled waves. Pilot the questionnaire with new and long-standing members.

Use the paper version at an annual meeting, member workshop, or community gathering. It mirrors the seven optional questions and answer options. Explain where completed forms go, who can read them, and how small-group confidentiality will be protected. Handwritten responses require secure manual entry or analysis and do not sync to SurveyLegend.

How to interpret member feedback
Start with tenure and benefit use, then compare which need was met best. Do not treat non-use as dissatisfaction: members may be unaware of a benefit, unable to access it, or simply not need it. Compare communication usefulness and contact support separately. Review future participation as an intention, not a forecast, and code open comments into specific benefits, channels, processes, or access barriers.
Wang and Ki open their abstract with: “Professional associations face the challenge of member engagement.” Their peer-reviewed member study surveyed 13,229 people across 18 professional associations and reported relationships among need fulfillment, perceived support, attitudes, and engagement. It does not prove causality, represent every nonprofit or club, or validate this questionnaire.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as a member interest survey?
No. Member Feedback reviews recent experience and value. Member Interest asks which future programs, topics, formats, or opportunities people want.
Should renewal intent be included?
Only if a renewal decision is genuinely part of the research task and the organization has a plan to act on it. This template uses future participation intention because membership value is broader than a single renewal prediction.
Can responses be segmented by membership type?
Yes, when the categories change the benefits people receive and each group is large enough to protect confidentiality. Avoid reporting tiny cells that could reveal an individual.
