People can enjoy the same gathering while making different choices about alcohol. Ask about their recent experience and what would make the next occasion more welcoming.

This alcohol and social occasions survey helps organizers understand drink choices, alcohol-free options and whether guests feel comfortable choosing for themselves. It includes adults who do not drink. Build the seven-question version in SurveyLegend and use it to plan practical changes without requesting a personal drinking history.

When to Use This Template

Use the template when reviewing social arrangements for a community or membership group. Define what counts as a social occasion, such as a dinner, celebration or informal gathering. The questionnaire focuses on one recent experience and future inclusion; it is not a measure of consumption volume or health risk.

7 Alcohol and Social Occasions Survey Questions

Think about the most recent social occasion you attended in the past 30 days. You can answer whether or not you drank alcohol. Every question is optional. Do not include names, health history or identifying details about other people. If you attended no occasion, select the relevant options or skip questions.

How to Adapt the Questionnaire

Invite adults appropriate to the actual setting and explain the purpose as improving inclusion. Do not use answers to target alcohol promotions or pressure people to explain abstinence. State who can view responses and keep identifying details out. SurveyLegend’s discussion of sensitive survey questions can help the organizer decide which information is necessary. Keep the no-occasion and prefer-not-to-say choices.

When to Ask

Collect feedback soon after the defined review period, privately rather than while people are being served drinks. If the aim is to improve one organizer's event, replace the reference period with that named event throughout every version. Avoid mixing a general month-long invitation with questions about only one specific gathering.

How to Use the Responses

Compare requested changes with reported availability and comfort. Do not treat non-drinkers as a single group or assume an alcohol-free drink choice reflects health, religion or recovery. Use the final open-ended question to identify changes to activities, labeling or service arrangements. Report skipped answers separately and summarize only sufficiently large groups. The survey cannot estimate alcohol intake, identify harmful drinking or establish what caused discomfort.

What the Research Adds

Taylor and colleagues (2019) conducted 6,235 interviews in four cities and included questions asked of “all respondents including abstainers.” Their findings varied by city, emphasizing that motives and social context differ. That supports including non-drinkers and avoiding a single assumed reason for a drink choice. The study did not test this event-planning questionnaire or establish which change will work at your gathering. Read the alcohol attitudes study .

Frequently asked questions

Should results be used to promote alcoholic drinks?

No. The stated purpose is inclusion and practical event improvements. Keep analysis and follow-up consistent with that purpose.
