Gaming Survey

Players can enjoy the same game for different reasons. One wants a challenge, another wants time with friends, and another wants to explore. This SurveyLegend template connects those preferences with a specific game and a recent period so a team can choose what to investigate next.

When to use this gaming survey

Use this template with adult players of an existing game, looking back over the past 30 days. It is not a bug report or a controlled playtest of one build. SurveyLegend's article on gaming surveys covers broader uses for retailers, developers and researchers; this questionnaire stays focused on player-experience priorities.

7 questions for your gaming survey

All seven questions are optional. Choose one answer where choices are listed; leave an irrelevant text field blank.

Respondent introduction: Think about playing the named game during the past 30 days. Every question is optional. If you have not played it in that period, choose that answer where offered and skip anything you cannot judge. Do not include player handles, account details or private messages.

How to customize your gaming survey

Name the game before the first question and keep the 30-day period consistent. Remove modes the game cannot support, but preserve another-way and uncertainty options. Do not treat a single main reason as a complete description of a player. Invite people through more than one appropriate channel when possible and record recruitment differences. Keep open-ended questions about a concrete moment rather than asking players to design an entire sequel.

Before distributing it, tell participants where to return the form, who will review it and how it will be handled. Review paper responses separately or enter them manually through your own agreed process; they are not automatically added to online responses.

How to use the answers

Compare priorities with reasons for playing and preferred social setting, showing the number of answers behind each comparison. A wish for shorter sessions may matter across several player groups; it does not automatically mean people dislike the game. In his 2006 study, Nick Yee reported three overarching motivation components: “achievement, social, and immersion.” The online game motivation study used factor analysis to develop a motivation model. This template borrows the practical idea of separating reasons for play, not its measurement instrument or scoring. It does not assign validated player types, diagnose problematic gaming or predict retention. Review comments alongside other appropriately collected evidence before selecting a change, and keep nonplayers' responses out of experience comparisons.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as a video game playtest survey?

No. A playtest asks about a defined build and test session. This template asks recent players what they value across ordinary play and which experience deserves further attention.

Can the answers identify player personality types?

No. The questions are original practical feedback items, not a validated personality or motivation scale. A selected reason is a response to one question, not a permanent player category.

Should the team implement the most requested feature?

Not automatically. Check how people were recruited, read the examples behind the preference, and consider feasibility and the game's purpose. A voluntary survey is not proof of market-wide demand.
