A person who listens to a podcast while commuting may want something different from someone reading a long article at home. This SurveyLegend questionnaire connects a recent media format with its purpose and setting. It gives you a focused starting point for deciding what content to develop or investigate next.

When to use this survey

Use the survey when planning content for an adult audience. Define whether personal use includes learning, news, and entertainment, and keep required work tasks outside the scope. This version asks about one most-used format, so it cannot describe every format a person uses or calculate total media consumption.

7 questions for your media usage survey

Think about your personal media use during the past seven days, excluding required work tasks. Include voluntary learning, news and entertainment. Select one answer where options are shown. If you used no media, choose the relevant options and leave any written question blank. All questions are optional.

Customize your media usage survey

Keep format choices distinct from platforms: a video and a social network are not equivalent categories. If your decision concerns podcasts only, rewrite the scope rather than using this broad survey to infer detailed podcast preferences. Avoid leading questions that describe a format as modern, productive, or a waste of time. Retain “not sure” and no-use choices.

Offer the same seven questions in a paper audience-feedback session. Print the dates and scope above the questions and explain where to return the form. Keep the same options when entering or reviewing paper answers; they are not automatically included online.

How to use the answers

Report the selected format and its purpose together. The frequency question refers only to that selected format; never sum it into hours or total media use. Check barriers before treating low usage as lack of interest. Group requests in the open-ended data by topic and access need, then choose a small content experiment. Describe results as feedback from respondents, not population audience shares unless the sampling design supports that claim.

Douglas A. Parry and colleagues’ 2021 meta-analysis found that self-reported digital media use “correlates only moderately with logged measurements”. Their media measurement study is a reason to keep reported habits separate from device records. This template uses a defined recall period and asks about purpose, but those choices do not make recall exact. The study concerns digital media; it does not validate this broader questionnaire or its seven-day period.

Frequently asked questions

Does this measure total screen time?

No. It asks about a selected format and reported frequency. It does not collect duration or device logs.

Can people choose more than one format?

This version asks for the format used most. If you need a full media mix, design separate questions for each relevant format and update the demo, prompt, and paper questionnaire together.

Can I use it to diagnose media addiction?

No. These are content-planning questions. They do not assess or diagnose problematic use.
