Customize your podcast listener survey

Ask about this show rather than podcasts in general. If the release schedule is monthly, extend the reference period and state the dates. Keep listening motives separate from desired episode length: wanting to learn does not mean wanting a longer episode. Leave space for listeners to suggest an unanticipated topic. Use focused open-ended questions to collect episode ideas that fixed topic lists might miss.

How to use the answers

Compare occasional and frequent listeners before changing the release format. Review the main motive alongside topic suggestions and length preferences. The most vocal respondents may not represent everyone who downloads the show. Check any proposed change against the editorial purpose and analytics, then test it in a clearly defined run of episodes. Group the open-ended data into topic requests, presentation comments and listening-context issues.

In the abstract, Chung and Kim (2016) write: “six dimensions of motivations were prominent for podcasts use”. Their college-student sample showed that podcast use had several motives. This template asks listeners why they choose this particular show instead of assuming one motive fits everyone. The student sample does not establish preferences for all podcast audiences. Read the podcast motivation research for the study's context.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tell me the ideal episode length?

It describes the preferences of respondents. Consider topic, production constraints and listening analytics before choosing a format.

Should I invite only subscribers?

Inviting occasional listeners can reveal different needs. Explain recruitment in your summary instead of treating an opt-in sample as the entire audience.

Is this a subscriber management form?

No. It gathers feedback. Subscription and notification changes must happen through the relevant listening platform.
