Turn answers into a practical next step

An interest in music does not automatically mean someone wants to join a choir or can attend weekly rehearsals. This SurveyLegend example helps community organizers choose an approachable music-making offer before committing to a program.

Plan a music-making offer

Use the survey before planning an adult community music taster or new activity series. It asks about making music, not favorite listening genres. For broader nonprofit programming, a member interest survey covers other activity types.

In their 2012 study of 398 participants aged 50 or older at three UK sites, Hallam and colleagues wrote in the abstract: “The predominant reason for participating in musical activities was enjoyment.” Their community music study supports asking about goals rather than assuming performance ambitions. Its existing participants do not represent every adult or explain all nonparticipation. The questions below are an original planning aid, not the study’s instrument.

Seven questions to adapt

Think about taking part in a community music-making activity in the next three months. Beginners and returning participants are welcome. Every question is optional. This is an interest survey, not an audition or registration form. Please do not include private details about yourself or other people.

Adapt the survey to your setting

Name the proposed program area, realistic cost range and whether equipment can be borrowed before sharing. Keep beginners, returning players and “Not sure yet” visible in the choices. Replace an activity only when the organizer cannot offer it; do not imply that every listed format is already scheduled.

Do not collect diagnoses, audition recordings or membership payments in this questionnaire. If respondents want to explain a musical goal, retain the focused open-ended question . Follow up separately with actual dates and enrollment details once a feasible offer exists.

Use the printable questionnaire

Use the blank paper version at a community open house or introductory meeting. Explain where to return it and how the organizer will review it. Paper answers are not automatically added to online results.

Interpret responses before acting

Start with activity preferences, then compare them with experience and the support respondents say would help. Strong interest in playing together plus requests for beginner guidance may justify an introductory ensemble session rather than an advanced rehearsal.

Keep preferred goals separate: enjoyment, social connection and technique development may call for different session plans. Question 5 asks for the biggest barrier, not every barrier, so its percentages cannot describe all obstacles. Review “Not interested” and “Not sure” responses without treating them as failures. Count answers per question, report skipped items separately, and do not turn expressed interest into a forecast of paid attendance. Confirm actual dates, price and capacity in a later registration step.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a music listening survey?

No. It helps plan activities in which adults make music. A listening survey instead asks about listening contexts, selection and habits.

Can beginners answer it?

Yes. The options include no previous experience, uncertainty and introductory support. Musical knowledge is not a prerequisite for expressing interest.

Can the results be used for auditions or placement?

No. Self-reported experience and preferences do not establish musical ability. Use an appropriate separate process if a program requires an audition.
