Understand recent social media habits

A useful usage survey needs more than one time estimate. This template separates platforms, time, purpose, activity style, connection, and stress or distraction so each answer has a clear meaning. The seven-day recall period gives respondents a recent window instead of asking them to summarize an undefined “usual” week. Browse related media templates when the task concerns another kind of content or audience.

When to use this template

Use this template for audience research, classroom discussion, community programs, communication planning, or a baseline before a digital-wellness initiative. It is designed to describe self-reported behavior, not diagnose addiction, anxiety, or any other condition. A broader social media survey can help explain the survey type and distribution context. For campaign recall or purchase research, use market templates instead.

Adapt the survey without blurring the task

Name the audience and the seven-day period in the introduction. Remove platforms that are impossible in the study context and add only platforms respondents can distinguish. Keep “I did not use social media,” “Not sure,” and “Not applicable” choices where provided; forcing an estimate turns uncertainty into false precision. If the actual task is brand recall rather than general behavior, send respondents to a focused brand awareness questionnaire. Pilot the wording with a small group and check whether “activity” and “purpose” are understood as different ideas.

How to interpret the responses

Start with separate distributions for platforms, time, purpose, and main activity. Cross-tab purpose with activity style before assuming that the same amount of time represents the same experience. Review connection and stress/distraction as self-reports, not clinical outcomes, and read long-text suggestions for repeated, actionable themes.

Keum and colleagues wrote that “the type—not just the frequency—of use impacts psychological well-being.” The original social media study examined 2,828 incoming U.S. undergraduates aged 17–25 and reported cross-sectional associations. It does not prove that one pattern caused an outcome, represent every adult population, or validate this questionnaire. If the survey is repeated, keep the recall window, wording, distribution method, and audience definition stable before comparing waves.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a social media addiction test?

No. It is an original usage questionnaire about recent behavior and self-reported experience. It does not diagnose addiction or any mental-health condition and should not be presented as a validated clinical scale.

Should respondents estimate daily or weekly time?

The template asks for total time on the highest-use day during the past seven days. Keep that wording if results will be compared. If a different recall rule is needed, state it precisely and do not compare it directly with the original measure.

Can platform answers be compared over time?

Yes, with care. Keep the platform list, audience, recruitment, recall period, and fielding conditions as consistent as possible. Record platform-list changes and report them alongside the results.
