Name Testing Survey Template
Test a proposed brand or product name with the people you want to reach. This name testing survey asks what the name suggests, how easy it is to say, and how well it fits the product.
A name can sound right in a meeting and mean something very different to a customer. Collect an unprompted reaction before explaining the product. That sequence helps you see what the name communicates on its own.
When to use this name testing survey
Use this template after you have a candidate name and before committing to a launch. It evaluates one name in a defined language and market. SurveyLegend can help you collect the feedback you need to decide whether to keep, revise, or investigate the name further.
If the product idea also needs feedback, use concept testing before choosing its name.
SurveyLegend's guide to product naming surveys provides additional context for deciding which name associations and product expectations to investigate.

How to customize your name testing survey
Keep typography neutral if you want feedback on the name itself. Run separate reviews for each language or market rather than assuming the same sounds and associations travel well. If pronunciation is essential, add a separate spoken task; a self-rating cannot show how people actually pronounce the word.
Before sharing, try the questionnaire with a few intended respondents and clarify anything they interpret differently.
When adapting the wording for another market, review SurveyLegend's guidance on neutral question wording so the questions do not praise or criticize the name for respondents.
Printable name testing survey template
Use this printable name testing survey template at a naming workshop, keeping the product description after the initial reaction questions. It gives people who prefer paper or are less comfortable online another way to respond. Include the same context, questions, and answer choices as the online version. Tell respondents where to return it and who will review it. Paper answers need separate review or manual entry; they are not automatically added to online responses.

How to use the answers
Compare spontaneous product expectations with the intended category. Review appeal, pronunciation, and fit as separate results instead of blending them into a single winner score. Investigate repeated unwanted associations and test revisions with a fresh group. These answers do not establish legal availability.
The EU-funded FLUENTBRAND project reported that pronunciation effects depended on product context. The practical lesson is to test ease of pronunciation alongside product fit, rather than assuming the easiest name is always best.
Frequently asked questions
Should I explain the name before asking questions?
Collect the first reaction first. Explain the product later so the explanation does not dictate the initial associations.
Will this check trademark or domain availability?
No. Audience feedback and availability checks are separate tasks. The survey can flag a resemblance or unwanted association that needs further investigation.
Can I use the same survey in another language?
Adapt it with a fluent reviewer and test it with the intended audience. Translation alone may miss pronunciation differences or local meanings.
