Turn Brand Personality Into a Decision

Use this template with people who know the named brand through a recent product, service or communication touchpoint. It narrows the task to traits and consistency. For wider associations, experiences and information gaps, use the brand perception template.

When to Use This Template

Use it before refining a style guide, message system or customer touchpoint. Define one intended trait before fielding, then compare it with spontaneous descriptions and consistency ratings. This is not awareness research, a logo brief, ad-copy test or reproduction of a validated brand-personality scale.

7 Questions for This Template

Use these seven optional questions as a starting point. Respondent introduction: Answer about the named brand based on your recent experience with it. All questions are optional. It is fine to choose “not enough information” when you cannot judge.

How to Customize the Questions

Name the brand without promotional language, replace [intended trait] with one real strategic trait and adapt the touchpoint list to actual exposure. If the research question is whether people recall or recognize the brand, use the brand awareness template. Pilot adjective meanings and allow “not enough information.”

How to Use the Answers

Code the open first-impression answer before reviewing prompted adjectives. Compare the intended trait with the selected traits and identify which touchpoint most often feels inconsistent. Roy et al. (2020/2021) wrote, “A consistent brand will generate trust and retain customers over time.” Read the brand consistency study . It used computational analysis of corporate web content, so the quoted proposition and model do not validate this questionnaire or prove that consistency causes trust.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the Aaker brand personality scale?

No. The questions and adjective list are original and are not a validated scale. Use licensed or published instruments under their stated conditions when formal measurement is required.

Who should answer this survey?

Recruit people with enough recent exposure to the named brand. Let unfamiliar respondents say they lack information instead of forcing trait ratings.

Should the intended trait be shown before open answers?

Usually no. Collect the unprompted description first, then ask about the intended trait so the label does not shape the initial response.
