When to use this candle feedback survey
A candle survey can help a maker understand first impressions of a specific scent and design. This example asks adults about one unlit sample, with separate questions for fragrance and appearance. Use it at a planned concept review or sample-feedback session. It records preferences at that moment; it does not measure how the candle burns or how far its scent travels in a room.
Separate scent appeal from visual expectations
A participant may like a candle’s fragrance but find it stronger than preferred. Another may like the container while expecting a different smell. Separate questions make those reactions easier to interpret than a single overall rating.
Fenko and colleagues (2009) experimented with color and smell in several products, including scented candles. Their abstract reports that, for candles, “smell and colour were equally important in determining freshness”. Read the publisher’s candle perception study . That result concerns perceived freshness in the tested combinations; it is not a universal rule about candle preference, air quality, or purchase behavior.
The practical application here is to ask about appearance and scent separately, then ask whether they seem to fit together. Use SurveyLegend to collect those reactions before deciding which aspect deserves another concept round.
Seven candle feedback questions
Answer about the one labeled, unlit candle shown for this feedback session. Do not light the candle for this questionnaire. Only assess aspects you experienced; choose unable to assess or skip a question when needed. All seven questions are optional. Do not include private or medical information.

Adapt the candle feedback questionnaire
Identify the sample and design version in the invitation. Keep lighting, viewing distance, and the presentation of samples consistent where practical. If scent labels are part of the concept, show everyone the same label; if you want an initial reaction without that influence, use a neutral sample code. Keep labeled and unlabeled sessions separate.
Let participants decline scent evaluation and retain “Unable to assess.” A photograph supports visual feedback, but it cannot provide fragrance evidence. Do not ask image-only respondents to imagine a smell and treat that as a sample rating.
SurveyLegend’s survey bias guidance is relevant when choosing neutral descriptions and comparable images. If your next study asks people to perform a defined product task, the product testing template covers task completion and instructions. Keep that later task separate from this unlit concept review.

Interpret the candle feedback responses
Begin with what each participant actually assessed. Report scent answers only among respondents who smelled the sample; show how many selected unable to assess. Compare scent liking with strength preference: a fragrance that is liked but judged too strong needs a different follow-up from one that is disliked at an acceptable strength. Examine visual appeal and visual-scent fit separately. A mismatch comment can suggest a label or color concept to test without proving either caused the reaction. Keep each sample version in its own results group. Do not infer burn performance, room coverage, safety, or air quality from these answers, and do not convert first impressions into a sales forecast.
Frequently asked questions
Can this survey be used with a candle photograph?
Yes, for the visual questions. Keep scent and scent-fit questions optional, and classify those responses as image-only. A photograph cannot establish how the fragrance is experienced.
Should participants light the sample?
No. This questionnaire is for an unlit concept review. Burn performance and scent during use need a separate, appropriate product-testing process.
Does a high rating prove the candle will sell?
No. The answers describe the invited participants’ reactions to a particular sample and presentation. Use them to refine a concept and plan the next review, not to forecast sales.
