This self-driving cars survey template explores how people feel about a driverless passenger service. Ask about familiarity, useful trips, willingness to try it, and unanswered questions before developing a service concept.

People may picture very different technologies when they hear “self-driving.” This SurveyLegend questionnaire starts with one hypothetical passenger-service scenario so respondents are reacting to the same idea.

When to use this survey

Use it during early service research, before treating interest as evidence of demand. Describe the proposed operating area, trip type, fare and passenger support arrangements consistently. For a wider idea that is still taking shape, use concept testing to explore how people understand the proposal.

7 questions for your self-driving cars survey

For this example, imagine a passenger service that operates without an onboard driver within a defined service area. This is a hypothetical idea, not a claim that a particular service is available or safe. Answer based on what you currently know. All questions are optional.

Customize your self-driving cars survey

Replace the example introduction with a neutral, fact-checked description of the service being studied. State what is hypothetical and what already exists. Avoid promotional safety claims or images that imply capabilities the service does not have. Keep the same description for all respondents when comparing answers; record any changes between survey rounds.

Use a printed copy at a transport workshop or concept session. Put the complete scenario above the questions so paper and online respondents see the same information. Do not collect names, precise travel routes or home addresses unless a separate research purpose requires them.

How to use the answers

Report familiarity and prior experience alongside willingness. Someone who needs more information has not necessarily rejected the idea. Sort open-ended data into support, cost, accessibility and trip-fit themes based on what respondents actually say. Interest does not forecast bookings, establish safety or show how people will act after a real ride.

Nordhoff and colleagues’ 2018 cross-national questionnaire study examined acceptance of driverless vehicles. Its abstract identifies “trust in driverless vehicles” among the variables associated with its general acceptance component. The driverless vehicle study supports exploring several aspects of attitudes rather than asking only whether someone likes the technology. This original questionnaire is not the study’s instrument and has not been validated by that research.

Frequently asked questions

Does this survey assess vehicle safety?

No. It collects attitudes and information needs. Safety assessment requires appropriate technical evidence and processes outside this questionnaire.

Should driver-assistance systems be included?

Use a separate survey with a clear description. A system that requires a human driver is a different experience from the driverless service described here.

Can willingness predict sales?

Treat it as stated interest in a specific scenario. Prices, availability, real experience and other conditions can change actual behavior.
