How to make multilingual surveys

Learn how to create a multilingual survey, using SurveyLegend.

Easily create a survey, which supports multiple languages. Reach a wider audience & get insight about how each group responds to your multilingual survey.

Multilingual SurveysHow to create multilingual surveys

Around 75% of the world’s population do not speak English. This is while you as a company owner, business strategists, or researcher, always need to reach out to a wider audience and ask them your critical questions to collect richer data. One smart way to reach out to a wider audience is to present them your questionnaire in their own preferred language.

This could have been very hard, if you were not a SurveyLegend user; but luckily you are and can enjoy creating a hassle free multilingual survey with ease.

Benefits of multilingual surveys

When you make your multilingual survey with our survey tool, you automatically get the following advantages:
  • One questionnaire for all target languages: You will send only one survey link to your respondents and let them choose their preffered language.
  • Easier promotional strategies: having an all-in-one solution makes it easier to promote your survey on different channels, e.g. via email; social media, SMS, etc… All you need to do is sharing “one” survey link, and let the audience choose.
  • Respondents choose their preferred language: many people know more than one language, but they may prefer to answer your questions in a certain language. For examples in countries which have many official languages, or many immigrants.
  • Sectioned data per language: not only we show all the data in one analytics page, the data will be sectioned by the language separately. This way, you will see how each language group responded.
  • Ask language-specific questions: sometimes you may need to ask a specific question from respondents who prefer a specific language. This is also possible in out multi-lingual surveys.
  • Increased quantity of collected data: for every language you use in your survey, you increase the chance of collecting more data. The easier you make it for respondents to express their opinions, the more data you will collect!
  • Increased quality of collected data: also because using multiple languages helps you reach a larger group of people and larger sections of the society, there will be a higher quality in the collected data.
  • Support for right-to-left languages: SurveyLegend is built to support any language, including including multi-byte character-set languages like Chinese and Japanese, or right-to-left languages like Persian, Arabic, or Hebrew.

How to create a multilingual survey

There are two different methods of creating multilingual surveys, and each of them has its own advantages.

Please continue reading, and choose the method that suits you the best. We recommend the first method as it is easier, faster, and more flexible.

Method 1: having each language in a separate survey (★ recommended ★)

Method 1: having each language in a separate survey

Method 1: having each language in a separate survey
(★ recommended method ★)

This is the easiest and fastest way of doing a multilingual survey campaign, and therefore our recommended method. In short, what you need to do is to create one questionnaire as entry point in which respondents will choose their preffered language, and one survey per language. The first questionnaire will be linked to each survey.

Advantages of this method:

  • Easier to create and maintain you pretty much spend time on creating only one main survey template, customize and design it, and setup logic flows; then simply duplicate it and translate it to different languages.
  • Easier to add new languages every time you add a new language, you basically duplicate the main survey template and link to it from the entry survey.
  • Keeping data separated beacause each survey is intended for a unique language, therefore collected data will help identify distinct groups audience and do further analysis.
  • Different ending scenarios because surveys are in different languages, you can end them in unique ways using customized Thank you pages for example, or rediricting respondents to different pages, as they may be from different markets or target groups.
  • Custom configurations or integrations you can have custom and individual configurations for each survey. For example if you setup webhooks, each language can get a custom configuration. Same goes for integrating your survey with Google Sheets or other 3rd party integrations.

Step 1: Create a new survey to use as a template for other languages

Just login to your account and click on the New survey button. Here you find more details about creating new surveys.

Now start adding your questions, and if needed, customise the design or setup logic flows. For this example, we are adding only two questions. But you’re of course free to add as many questions as you need.

make a template for your survey in one of the languages first

Step 2: Rename the survey

It’s important to give a recognizable name to your survey, because you will need to know which one is which one when looking at the list of surveys in your dashboard. To rename the survey, simply navigate to Configure step and type a new name; for example: “Customer satisfaction survey | quarter 2 (English)”

Step 3: Duplicate the original template and translate it

Now that you have a template for your survey, you can easily duplicate it and translate it to a new language. The amazing thing here is that all your configurations and customizations will be duplicated as well, and all you need to do is to translate the new survey in another language. The new survey will get a unique link, which we will need soon. Find more info about duplicating surveys here if needed.

Repeat the process for each one of the languages and don’t forget to renmae the surveys properly!

Step 4: Copy and save the survey links

When you duplicate a survey, our system will assign a new unique link to it. Now make sure to go to the share step of each survey one by one, and copy and save their links in a text file. We will need to redirect to these links (surveys) from a new questionniare that we will make now.

Step 5: Create a new questionnaire in which respondents choose their preffered language

In this questionnare, you need to add an initial question that lets respondents choose their preferred language. To do so, drag in a question type called Picture selection from the left panel where all question types are presented.

The reason we are using the Picture selection question is visual. That it gives your survey a more beautiful look, but most importantly makes it easier and faster for your respondents to find their preferred language amongst offered languages.

Using the Picture Selection question, you can illustrate each language with a flag, making it not only more beautiful, but also faster and easier for respondents to find their own language amongst all choices.

Next, you need to choose flags that represent the language you need from our flag list at the bottom of this document, and upload it to your Picture selection question. Then name each choice respectively.

Tip:

It’s better to write the name of the language, in the original language. For example, Swedish is the English name for the Swedish language, but Swedes call their language “Svenska”. So if you are targeting this audience, it is better to write in their own language too.

At the bottom of this guide, we have a list of all countries, and their official languages, and original spelling of each language name.

Step 6: Adjust these important settings for your initial question

This initial question will be used to let respondents choose in which (language) they want to take this survey. Therefore, it’s crucial to adjust these question settings and make sure they are correct!

Make the question compulsory

It’s very important to make answering this question compulsory!! Otherwise, your respondents can bypass this question and see rest of the survey (which includes other languages).

By making the answer “required”, respondents cannot continue to the rest of the survey. They must basically tell our system what language they prefer.

Adjust the layout

Make sure that the layout settings are correct. preferably you want to set the aspect ratio of the pictures on 6:4 or 16:9, because items would look more like real flags. You can also adjust the number of pictures per row to number of languages if possible.

No zoomable / enlargeable images

Make sure that the “Zoomable pictures” setting is OFF. Because this is not needed for our purposes and can just make everything complicated, unnecessarily.

Adjust the voting type

And the last setting that you need to check is the “Voting type”. It has to be on “Single”, which means respondents cannot choose more than one choice at a time.

Add redirect link to choices

Enable this feature to add a link to the choices (pictures). When respondents click on the choice which has a link it will load the link. Also our system records which choice they clicked on before they leave the survey. Read more about adding redirect link to pictures & choices.

Open redirect link in same the tab

Make sure this feature is enabled too. This is because when someone clicks on a flag (chooses their preffered language), the survey which is linked to it will immidiately open in the same browser tab as the survey itself.

Tip:

This feature works perfectly fine, even if you have embedded your survey in a web-page.

Step 7: Link the flags to their respective surveys

Do you remember that we just copied the links to your surveys? Now we need them. To add links to images, click on each link button and paste the respective survey link.

clicking the link button will let you add a link to each picture

Step 8: Remove the submit button

It’s important to remove the submit button, as you do not want respondents to click on it by mistake. When respondents come to this survey, all that matters is letting them choose the right lnguage. Therefore, nothing else must be clickable.

To remove the submit button, click on it, and then from the sttings on the left side, enable the following feature:

Step 9: copy the link to this survey and share it

Now that you have made the entry point questionnaire, go to its share step, and copy its link. This is the survey that you will be sharing with your respondents. They will choose the language that they feel most comfortable with, and automatically get redirected to it, within the same browser tab.

Method 2: having all languages in the same survey

Method 2: having all languages in the same survey

Method 2: having all languages in the same survey

Advantages of this method:

  • All data in one place: all collected data is accessible in real-time via our analytics tool. You can directly see statistics about how many procent of your audience have chosen which language. This means there is no need to navigate to other analytics pages, specially if you want to share the analytics using a private link.
  • Better for short surveys some users may feel this method is better as they have all they need in one place and they do not have to jump between different surveys, specially when the survey is short.

Step 1: Create a new survey

Just login to your account and click on the New survey button. Give your survey a suitable name, and then go to the “Create” step. More details about creating new surveys…

Step 2: Add an initial language question

The first thing you need to do is to add an initial question that lets respondents choose their preferred language. To do so, drag in a question type called Picture selection from the left panel where all question types are presented.

Step 3: Adjust these important settings for your initial question

This initial question will be used to let respondents choose in which (language) they want to take this survey. Therefore, it’s crucial to adjust these question settings and make sure they are correct!

Make the question compulsory

It’s very important to make answering this question compulsory!! Otherwise, your respondents can bypass this question and see rest of the survey (which includes other languages).

Adjust the voting type

And the last setting that you need to check is the “Voting type”. It has to be on “Single”, which means respondents cannot choose more than one choice at a time.

Step 4: Add a Page Break after this initial question

Now drag a Page Break right after this initial question. This will make this question the “first” and the “only” question which your respondents will see, after coming to your survey.

Note:

It is very important to display only this question first, which means rest of the survey will be hidden until respondents have chosen their preferred language. We will explain this in details, further down in this document.

Step 5: Write your next questions in one of the languages

Now start by adding your questions in any of the languages you prefer. For this example, we are adding only two questions. But you’re of course free to add as many questions as you need.

this illustration shows an example of a survey with two initial questions in English

Step 6: Duplicate the questions and translate them

After adding your initial questions -to save time- you can select the questions individually and press the duplicate button.

This way, you’ll make a new copy of the question, which you can then translate to a different language.

When you’re done with the translations, use the drag-and-drop functionality to organize the questions. Simply put all questions which are written in the same language, after each other.

this picture shows an example of questions which are originally made in English, which are duplicated and being translated by the survey creator.

Step 7: Divide languages using page breaks

After organizing the questions into groups, it’s now time to divide them into distinct pages using Page Breaks. Simply drag a Page Break filed form the side bar and drop it between the groups of questions.

For this tutorial, we’ve divide our questions in 3 different languages. Therefore, we drag in two Page Breaks to divide the questionnaire into 3 distinct pages; and also remember that we have added one more Page Break right after the first initial question, which separates that from the rest of the survey.

One page, per language…

this illustration shows how you can divide your multilingual questionnaire into different pages. One page for each language.

Step 8: Add logic flows

Now the fun part begins, which is making your questionnaire to smartly react on how respondents answer your first language question (which language they choose).

What you want to do is to tell our system to “SHOW” for example the English page, “IF” the respondent chooses the English language at the beginning of the survey; and show the other language, if respondents choose the other one, and so forth…

So, now while you’re on the “Create” step, activate the “Logic” step, using the toggle button at the bottom-left corner. When activated, go to the “Logic” step, using the navigation buttons located at the top bar.

Next, start creating a logic flow, by following these simple steps:

A: So, click on the language question (first question), to create a new logic flow.

B: Now, when you’re in the logic flow creation mode, choose the choice “is”.

C: Then select the relevant language for this flow (in this example, we choose English).

D: Now scroll down to the “THEN” section of your logic flow, and add a consequence for this rule that you just made. You can do that by choosing “Show” from the first dropdown, and then from the second one, choose “Page”; and then choose page number 2 from the list below (which is our English page in this example).

E:Now simply repeat these steps for each language, and create similar logic flows for each one of them.

Below, you see an illustration of the logic that we just created:

Logic Flow #1
IF
answer to the following question
*Please choose your preferred language.
is
illustration of a selected language in survey logic flow editor
THEN
show
page(s)
Page #2
end of logic flow

The above illustration shows a logic flow, made to “show” the questions which are written in English language (located in Page #2 of this questionnaire), to respondents who choose “English” as they preferred language, in the first question.

Each language in this survey, would need a similar logic flow to be displayed to respective respondents.

Note:
Note that you MUST use the “Show” logic to create this flow. It is possible to use the “Skip to” or “Hide” logic as well, to create a smart survey. But in this case, the “Show” consequence will make sure that all the other languages are hidden and will never be displayed to the respondents. It’s the safest way to create such a survey!

Step 9: Preview data

Now is time to share your survey enjoy watching the collected data in real-time, as responses come in.

It’s good to know that since we separated the questions into distinct groups, we can easily see how respondents from each language groups have responded to your questions.

To the top of the flag list…

Note:

When we made this table, we did some research on the conventional online encyclopedias and other resources. But please note that we are not linguists, or politicians, and therefore don’t know all sensitive issues and expectations when it come to ethnic groups who are living in different countries, different flags, or languages. Therefore, we do not know if what “we” referred to as “Official language name(s)” or “Country flags” here, is 100% aligned with the reality, or aligned with what residents of that country expect to see. 🙂 Same goes for the correct spelling of the languages in their original format.

This list is only crafted to ease your work as a survey creator!! We hope that we do not offend anyone, or do not exclude them. If this has happened, it’s just unintentional. By constructing this table, we are not following or reflecting any political views or agendas.

We hope that you forgive us if you feel that you or any language or ethnicity is excluded from this list; and please feel free to contact us and let us know, and we will do our best to create a better language table as a guide for your multi-lingual surveys.

With love to all human beings, and all beautiful languages around the world!

I eventually grew up after painting on many walls, getting too many scars, watching loads of animated movies, taking care of lots of injured animals, and inventing crazy strategies to bypass the "dictatorship" of the adults, and got a B.A. in Psychology. Shortly after, I grew up a bit more and got two M.A. degrees in art & design.

Today, after growing up slightly more, I realize that I've been working with many companies and brilliant people, inventing new tech solutions, designing & coding cool stuff, making cute illustrations; while still truly enjoying, loving, and adoring the mother nature and all amazing cuddly creatures out there.
