Understand the Contestant Experience

Use this form after a judged competition has ended and its results or feedback have been delivered. It focuses on what organizers can improve for future contestants. For feedback from the wider audience, use a post-event survey instead.

When to Use This Template

Use it for adult contestants in one completed arts, cooking, pitch, talent or similar judged competition. The shared reference should be the named event and its published process. Keep entry data, public votes, judge scoring, formal appeals and allegations outside this optional experience form.

How to Customize the Questions

Replace “named competition” with the real event and describe when answers will be reviewed. If candor depends on identity handling, explain whether responses are anonymous or confidential and review SurveyLegend’s anonymous feedback guidance. Adapt stage options to the format without asking respondents to identify judges or other contestants.

How to Use the Answers

Read clarity, preparation, criteria communication and feedback as separate signals. A low rating does not by itself show bias or misconduct; examine the published process and route formal appeals separately. Jeon and Park (2016) found that “even a single statistically uncharacteristic score can be enough to gravely distort our inference of the community structure.” Read the competition network study . It is a computational analysis of one piano competition, not a validation of this form or a finding about every judged event.

Frequently asked questions

When should contestants receive the form?

Send it after results or feedback have been delivered, using the same timing for all contestants where practical. State the response deadline and who will review answers.

Can this form decide whether judging was fair?

No. It records perceptions of communication and process. Fairness complaints require the competition’s evidence, rules and appeal procedure.

Should responses be anonymous?

Choose anonymity or confidentiality deliberately and explain the choice before collection. Avoid promising anonymity if identifiers, tracking links or sign-in data are retained.
