This business demographic survey records an organization's industry, size, location and purchasing role so you can describe the businesses represented in your study.

A buyer survey can sound decisive while overrepresenting one type of organization. SurveyLegend helps researchers collect a small set of business characteristics and report whose answers they actually received.

When to use this template

Use this as a short standalone screener or alongside a clearly defined B2B study. Ask for broad bands rather than sensitive figures. For characteristics of individual people, see the demographic questions article; this template describes organizations.

Customize your business demographic survey

Name the product or service category and target market before sharing. Adapt industry and geography bands to the sampling frame and keep them stable across comparison waves. Exclude exact revenue unless genuinely necessary. Use the market research collection to choose a separate needs or preference survey; this short form alone does not reveal buying motivation.

Use the same seven optional organization-level questions on a paper card at a trade event. Explain who receives the completed cards and manually review them; paper and online replies do not merge automatically.

How to use the answers

Report respondent counts by industry, region and size alongside the actual recruitment route. Separate people involved in purchasing from other roles before interpreting supplier feedback. Do not label a convenience sample representative of all businesses or infer exact company revenue from staff bands.

Mora Cortez and colleagues studied B2B segmentation practices with interviews and a survey of 259 managers across four countries. The university-hosted abstract says “segmentation purposes (sales, marketing, and monitoring) influence segmentation variables”. Choose only organization characteristics relevant to the decision; these original seven questions do not constitute a validated segmentation model. Source: Mora Cortez et al. (2025) .

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a personal demographic survey?

It asks about an organization and respondent buying role, not personal age, gender or household income.

Do I need exact annual revenue?

Usually not for this example. Broad staff bands may be enough; ask for sensitive figures only when the study really requires them.

Can these answers define the whole market?

No. Describe the recruitment and coverage before generalizing beyond respondents.
