Find out what happened on a real shopping trip. This shopper insights survey template asks adults what they meant to buy, what they found and where their plans changed in one named store.

A shopper may enter with a list and leave with a substitute, an extra item or neither. SurveyLegend helps retail teams ask about a recent trip in enough detail to improve the shelf, information and route to a decision.

When to use this template

Invite adults who recently visited the same store and specify a short recall window, such as the past seven days. For a store-service problem, use the retail feedback template; this questionnaire focuses on the trip and choices rather than rating staff. For broad market questions before a trip, use target market research.

Customize your shopper insights survey

Name the store and date window. Ask soon after the trip and retain the “came to browse,” “did not choose” and “cannot remember” paths. A self-report does not prove what someone bought; compare grouped responses with inventory and observable store conditions before changing displays.

Provide the identical seven optional questions and open-answer space for intercept research at a store exit. Keep participation voluntary, explain the purpose and avoid collecting transaction or payment identifiers.

How to use the answers

Group trip goals before interpreting choice factors; a browsing visit has a different starting point from a list-based errand. Examine reported substitutions alongside shelf availability. Treat unplanned purchases as recalled reports, not verified transaction data or proof of an in-store campaign effect.

Bell, Corsten and Knox examined trip-level factors in retail buying with panel data. Their university-hosted abstract identifies shoppers' “overall trip goals, store-specific shopping objectives, and prior marketing exposures” as preshopping factors. That supports asking about purpose before asking about the final choice; it does not validate these seven SurveyLegend questions or establish a causal effect for one store. Source: Bell et al. (2011) .

Frequently asked questions

When should this survey be sent?

Soon after a named store visit, within a short window that shoppers can remember. State the period clearly.

Does it show actual purchasing behavior?

No. Responses describe remembered plans and decisions. Use transaction and stock records separately when needed.

How is this different from retail customer feedback?

This version follows one shopping trip from its goal to product discovery and choice. A retail service form asks about the overall customer experience.
