This consumer purchasing habits survey asks adults about recent purchases in one product category: how often they bought, where the latest purchase happened, and what mattered in that decision. Use it to explore buying patterns without asking people to guess for their whole household.

“How do you usually shop?” leaves plenty of room for interpretation. This SurveyLegend template starts with a defined category and period, then asks about the latest purchase. That combination helps separate a broad frequency estimate from the details of a particular buying occasion.

When to use this survey

Use this version for a regularly purchased category such as household cleaning products or packaged snacks. Recruit adults who personally made at least one purchase in the past 30 days. It describes reported behavior, not future demand or brand loyalty. If the decision concerns where people are in a buying journey, SurveyLegend's overview of customer stages explains the broader context.

Customize your consumer purchasing habits survey

Define a purchase as a separate buying occasion, not the number of items in a basket. Keep the latest-purchase questions tied to the same occasion. A 30-day window is a practical starting point for everyday categories, not a universal research standard; choose a different period for infrequent purchases and revise all references together. Do not ask a respondent to estimate a partner's shopping. Check any added promotional language for leading questions .

How to use the answers

Report the frequency bands and transaction channels as distributions, with a separate count of people who could not remember. Compare the latest occasion's planning status, main stated factor, comparison effort and prior brand experience only where the sample permits. Do not convert a prior brand purchase into a loyalty score or assume a selected reason proves what caused the sale. Respondents with more purchases still contribute only one latest occasion, so these answers do not estimate the share of all market transactions. Review barriers for a specific next investigation, then compare with appropriately collected transaction or observational evidence if available.

Research connection: Dashen (2000) studied recall of personal and proxy purchases. The abstract reports that after a one-week delay, “both proxy and self-reporters tended to report typical items.” This purchase recall study is a reason to treat memory-based shopping reports cautiously. SurveyLegend therefore asks about the respondent’s own purchases and a specific recent occasion. The study does not validate a 30-day window for every category or establish the accuracy of these original questions.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone answer for their household?

This version asks about the respondent's own purchases. Household spending research needs a design that defines whose purchases count and how another person's activity will be recorded.

Why ask about the latest purchase?

It gives respondents a concrete occasion for the channel and decision questions. It still relies on memory and does not represent every purchase they made.

Can this forecast sales?

No. Self-reported habits from the invited sample are not a sales forecast. Forecasting needs an appropriate sample, market context and other evidence.
