Understand how people use connected home devices, where setup or data information falls short, and what would help them decide. Adapt seven questions in SurveyLegend.

Ask about a real household task

A smart light and a connected lock serve different needs. Name one device or concept, describe what it does in plain language, and invite people who have not used it as well as current users. This survey explores usability and information needs; it does not test device security.

When to use this IoT survey

Use it when a product team wants to improve setup guidance, compatibility explanations or data-use information for a named connected home device. Keep ownership separate from interest, and never ask someone to describe an experience they did not have. SurveyLegend's product feature template reviews a feature of an existing product. 7 Internet of Things survey questions

Think about the connected home device named by the organizer and the task it could perform. It is fine if you have never used one. All seven questions are optional. Choose one answer except where the question allows several.

Adapt the survey to one device

Replace the broad device list with the categories people will recognize locally, but preserve a no-use response. Supply the same neutral description of the device's automation and data behavior to all respondents before asking comfort or clarity. If testing a device prototype after use, pair this with observed task testing; opinions do not show that the device functions securely or reliably. Pilot with both owners and nonowners.

Printable IoT survey questionnaire

Print the same seven questions and answer options with room for the final comment. State the device description on the form so paper and online participants assess the same concept. Paper answers need separate collection and are not included in demo activity counters.

Read use, friction and trust separately

First split current users from people considering a device, then compare the named task, setup friction, clarity of data information and the single requested explanation. A concern about what data is collected needs clear documentation and review; a setup concern may need different instructions. Cannizzaro and colleagues' 2020 UK smart-home study examined awareness, ownership, experience and trust. Its abstract says, “Anxiety about the likelihood of a security incident emerges as a prominent factor influencing adoption.” Read the study . That nationally representative UK survey informs which dimensions are worth asking about, but it does not validate these original seven questions or prove that an individual device is secure. Your own sample and stated device will limit the interpretation.

Frequently asked questions

Can nonowners answer this survey?

Yes. The first and third questions include no-use options. Interpret their decision information separately from owners' accounts of using a device.

Does the survey assess cybersecurity?

No. It asks how clear data information appears and how people feel about a described task. Technical testing and privacy review require separate expertise.

Should several devices share one survey?

Only if the questions clearly name which device each answer concerns. A single device and task produce a more useful first version; split different products when their setup and data practices differ.
