Before a family can agree on the farm’s future, each person needs room to describe what they want. Use seven optional questions to prepare a clearer succession conversation.

This farm succession planning survey helps adult family members discuss future roles, learning opportunities and unanswered questions. It is a conversation starter, not an agreement about inheritance or ownership. SurveyLegend can help organize the questionnaire before a family meeting or a facilitated discussion.

When to Use This Template

Use the template when the family is ready to explore succession but does not yet share an understanding of what comes next. Invite adults with relevant interests, including people who do not work on the farm. Allow responses to be kept private until the respondent agrees what can be shared. Do not interpret a willingness to talk as a commitment to take over.

7 Farm Succession Planning Survey Questions

Please answer from your own perspective about the farm's future. Every question is optional. Your answers do not create an agreement or assign responsibilities. Do not enter asset values, account details, legal documents or private information about another person.

How to Adapt the Questionnaire

Define who will receive answers and whether respondents can choose what to share. Explain that small-family responses may be recognizable even without names. Review SurveyLegend’s guidance on sensitive survey questions before collecting private views. Keep financial figures and legal documents out of this questionnaire. Adapt roles to the actual operation without assuming the oldest child, a particular gender or someone already working there will become the successor.

When to Ask

Invite responses before a scheduled discussion, leaving time for private reflection. Avoid requiring completion during a dispute or immediately after an unexpected family event. Let people decline or ask to speak privately. If a facilitator is involved, agree their role and access to responses in advance.

How to Use the Responses

Do not average family preferences into a majority decision about anyone’s future. Compare stated interests, information needs and discussion arrangements, then ask permission before sharing individual comments. The final open-ended question can shape the agenda. Agree one next step, such as explaining a management task or arranging an independent conversation. A mismatch in aspirations is something to discuss, not evidence that a person is uncommitted or unsuitable.

What the Research Adds

Jansuwan and Zander (2024) surveyed 368 older farmers in Thailand. Their abstract describes succession activity ranging from “starting conversations with their children” to participation in work and decision-making. This distinction informs the template’s separate questions about discussions, desired roles and preparation. The study reports associations in one setting; it does not prescribe a family’s plan or validate these seven questions. Read the farm succession study .

Frequently asked questions

Does completing the survey transfer any ownership?

No. These are discussion questions, with no transfer, inheritance decision, signature or legal effect built into the template.

Can someone say they do not want a farm role?

Yes. Keep that answer available and respect it. Succession conversations should make room for different aspirations rather than assume participation.

Should the family receive every individual answer?

Only according to the process explained beforehand and the respondent's sharing preferences. In a small family, removing a name may not prevent identification.
