Ask learners which course formats they can use and prefer, why, and what support may help. Adapt seven optional questions in SurveyLegend.

Plan a format people can actually use

Course-format choices involve more than a favorite medium. Ask about practical constraints, activity needs and support before fixing the timetable. This questionnaire records preferences for one course; it does not diagnose a learning style or measure learning outcomes.

When to use this learning modality survey

Use it before choosing delivery for one upcoming course whose feasible formats are known. If the decision is about a module already completed, use the online module survey. For a broader retrospective, use a course evaluation . Browse other education templates when the decision is different.

How to adapt this learning modality survey

Name the course and show only formats the institution could realistically offer. If device or internet access is the central decision, use a separate tech access survey and provide a non-digital response route. Explain who sees answers and how format decisions will be made. Pilot the wording with learners from the intended course.

Interpret preferences as planning input

Count first-choice and hardest-to-use formats separately. Then compare the practical-factor and activity questions; a popular format may still create a barrier for part of the group. Mehta et al. (2024) reported that “the most frequently selected 1st and last choices were In-person and Online-synchronous modes, respectively.” Read the study . Their 968-student UK sample and pandemic-period context do not validate this questionnaire or prove that the most preferred mode produces better learning. Use responses to plan a feasible offer and document how minority access needs were considered.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a learning-styles test?

No. It asks about formats, practical factors and course activities for one planning decision. It must not assign visual, auditory or other fixed learning-style labels.

Should the most popular format always win?

Not automatically. Feasibility, accessibility, learning activities and the needs of smaller groups also matter. Explain the decision process before asking.

When should this survey be sent?

Send it while the course format can still change and after learners receive enough information about the actual options. Avoid surveying after the timetable is fixed unless the purpose is clearly different.
