Ask new students about expectations, academic help, peer connection, service awareness, practical barriers, and the next support they need.

When to use this template

Use this check-in after new students have had enough time to experience classes, support routes and campus life. The seven questions focus on practical transition needs. They do not diagnose wellbeing, predict retention, or reproduce the copyrighted Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire.

What this template helps you decide

The responses help a student-success team decide whether the next improvement should clarify course expectations, make it easier to ask for academic help, strengthen peer connection, or explain support services. Evaluate one named tutoring or advising service with the learning support template instead.

How to customize this template

Choose a clear check-in point and adapt the student-situation choices to the institution. Do not require disclosure of diagnoses, immigration status, grades, or family finances. If the goal is to evaluate the full established experience rather than the transition period, use the student satisfaction template. Provide separate routes for urgent, confidential or individual help.

How to interpret the responses

Review each transition dimension separately and preserve the “not sure” and “prefer not to answer” options. A student who does not know where to ask for help needs a different response from a student who knows the route but cannot access it. Malau-Aduli and colleagues recommend “tailored on-going support strategies that promote social interaction among students” in a university transition study . Their health-professions context limits generalization and does not validate this SurveyLegend template. Use comments to design specific support changes, not to label individual students.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire?

No. This is a short original SurveyLegend support check-in. It does not reproduce the SACQ, use its scoring, or claim its validation.

When should the survey be sent?

A check-in around weeks four to eight often gives students enough experience to answer while leaving time to improve support. Adapt timing to the academic calendar and the decisions the team can still change.

Can answers identify students at risk?

Do not use this general feedback template as a diagnostic or prediction tool. Provide direct, confidential help routes and follow the institution’s established safeguarding and support processes.
