This school lunch survey asks students about a recent cafeteria meal, including taste, choice, queues, and time to eat. Use the answers to choose a practical improvement to the lunch experience.

A student may like the food and still have too little time to eat it. Separate the meal from the way lunch is organized so the kitchen and school know which issue to address.

When to use this school lunch survey

School food teams can use this questionnaire with students who can independently understand the wording. It supports service improvement after a named lunch day, rather than a nutrition assessment or a vote on what every student must eat. Create the survey in SurveyLegend and identify the meal being reviewed.

Customize the questions for your setting

Name the actual lunch rather than asking students to average every meal they can remember. Offer a plain-language paper version when needed. Keep the option for students who did not try the meal; their replies should not be counted as taste ratings. Test the wording with the intended age group before collecting answers. Avoid leading questions that describe a meal as healthy or delicious before students have evaluated their experience.

Use a printable school lunch survey

Offer the blank questionnaire after the named lunch service for people who prefer paper or cannot answer online. Explain where completed forms should be returned and who will review them. Handwritten replies need separate manual handling; they are not automatically added to online results.

Turn the responses into practical improvements

Review food liking, choice fit, queues, and eating time separately. A queue problem calls for a different response from an unpopular dish. Exclude non-tasters from the taste summary and report that denominator. Group suggestions before choosing an action the school can explain to students. For a controlled tasting of a proposed recipe, use a separate food evaluation form .

In the abstract, Tuorila and colleagues (2015) write: “appropriate queuing in the canteen”. The authors include this among the variables associated with meal ratings. This template applies that distinction by asking separate food and service questions. The study involved selected school grades; its findings do not establish a universal menu or validate these original questions. Read the school meal research .

Frequently asked questions

Does this measure nutritional quality?

No. Students describe their experience. Nutritional review requires the appropriate food-service expertise and meal information.

Can students who brought lunch answer?

They can explain why the offer did not fit or suggest improvements, but should choose the non-use options for the meal and queue questions.

Should the most popular food always be served?

Use preferences alongside practical menu requirements and professional dietary planning. A popularity result alone does not decide the menu.
