Use this teacher satisfaction survey to understand how educators evaluate their current working conditions. Seven optional questions cover overall satisfaction, workload, resources, leadership communication, recognition and the change that deserves attention first.

Give Satisfaction a Clear Reference Period

Ask teachers to think about the current term or another stated period. That keeps ratings connected to recent working conditions. Satisfaction is broader than one good or difficult day, yet it should not be treated as a permanent trait or a score of teaching quality.

Research Context for Teacher Job Satisfaction

Edinger and Edinger studied 122 elementary teachers and report that “perceived organizational support strengthened the relationship between teacher efficacy and job satisfaction.” Read the satisfaction study . It supports including support and workplace relationships, but its small setting-specific sample and associative design do not establish universal causes.

Adapt the Questions Without Turning Them Into an Appraisal

Keep workload, resources, leadership and recognition as separate topics. If the school adds department or grade-level fields, suppress reporting for groups that are too small. Do not ask teachers to name colleagues or students. Use separate, clearly signposted processes for grievances, safeguarding and urgent wellbeing support.

Identify Conditions the School Can Change

Start with each satisfaction distribution rather than averaging everything into one number. Compare the top improvement priority with the open comments, and examine workload, resources, communication and recognition separately. Protect small groups and do not rank individual teachers. Satisfaction is not engagement, performance or a clinical outcome. Close the loop with the themes, decisions and review date.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from teacher engagement?

Satisfaction asks how teachers evaluate their job conditions. Engagement focuses more closely on energy, involvement and the ability to focus on work. Related patterns should remain separate in interpretation.

Can results be used in performance reviews?

This template is designed for group-level workplace improvement, not individual appraisal. Using it for appraisal would change the purpose, trust and privacy expectations.

How often should schools ask?

Use a cadence leaders can act on, such as once per term or at defined planning points. Repeated surveys without visible follow-up can reduce trust and response quality.
