When to use this campus climate survey

Use this SurveyLegend example when a student-affairs team can act on the answers. Name the institution and term, explain who will review responses, and invite students whose schedules or learning arrangements may keep them away from campus activities. A short survey can reveal a useful starting point without claiming to describe every student's experience.

What the answers help you decide

The decision might be to make participation information easier to find, clarify where students can raise a concern, or improve staff availability. Keep academic course ratings separate so a difficult class does not become a proxy for the whole campus climate. SurveyLegend’s education templates cover other school and teaching tasks.

Seven questions for your campus climate survey

Think about your experience with this institution's campus community during the current term, including relevant online spaces. Every question is optional. Do not name people or describe identifiable incidents. This feedback form is not an urgent-help or formal reporting channel; use the institution's separately provided support route when needed.

Adapt the campus climate survey to your audience

Define campus community broadly enough to include online discussions and off-campus students. Use one term consistently, rather than mixing this week with the entire degree. Explain who sees comments and how long responses are retained. Have a student review the wording before sharing. If the institution needs a formal climate study about discrimination or misconduct, use its approved research and reporting process; this short feedback example is not a substitute.

Interpret your campus climate survey responses

Read belonging, respect, voice and access as separate experiences. Someone can feel connected to friends while finding staff difficult to approach. Show each item’s response counts and keep no-experience choices separate from negative ratings. Group suggestions into actions such as clearer activity information or more approachable help. SurveyLegend’s open-ended data guidance can help with that review. Do not publish identifiable comments or infer a campus-wide prevalence from volunteers.

Slaten and colleagues’ 2016 abstract highlights “within-group social connection” in a qualitative study of 11 Asian international students at one Midwestern U.S. university. The campus belonging study provides context for asking about connection separately from other experiences. Its small, specific sample does not establish findings for all students or validate these original questions.

Frequently asked questions

Does campus climate mean student satisfaction?

They overlap, but this example asks about social experiences and participation. Overall satisfaction can also reflect fees, facilities, teaching and other services.

Can this survey receive misconduct reports?

It should not be used as an incident-reporting channel. Provide the institution's verified support and reporting route separately, with clear information about who receives it.

Can I compare departments?

Only add group information when there is a clear purpose and a plan to protect small groups. This seven-question version does not collect department identifiers or provide department rankings.
