Use it after a normal school week and name the dates students should consider. Include students who did not choose school meals, while letting them skip questions about food they did not try. Have the school review the wording and participation process for the age group before sharing.

Customize your student school food survey

Choose a typical five-day school week or adjust the day-count options for the actual period. Use age-appropriate wording and check that students understand each answer choice. Keep allergy reporting and individual meal accommodations in the school’s established process. Tell students how their suggestions will be considered without promising that every requested food can be served.

Offer the blank questionnaire to students who would find paper easier. Adults helping with reading should avoid suggesting answers. If you distribute an online version through school communications, the principles of an email survey can help you write a clear invitation for the appropriate recipients.

How to use the answers

Separate students who tried the meals from those who did not when reviewing taste answers. Keep “did not try” out of satisfaction percentages. Group open-ended data into menu choices, information and lunch arrangements. Review possible changes with meal providers; preference answers do not establish nutritional quality or food safety.

Day and colleagues’ 2015 qualitative study in eight North England primary schools found that pupils wanted “increased choice and menu variety”. The school meal study supports asking students about the choices they experience rather than relying only on an overall rating. Its findings reflect that school context; they do not validate these original questions or establish what every school should serve.

Frequently asked questions

Should students who bring lunch from home answer?

They can answer questions about menu information and lunchtime, while skipping food ratings they cannot judge. Do not ask them to rate meals they have not tried.

Can this collect allergy information?

Use the school’s established individual meal and allergy process separately. This form is for general feedback.

Will popular suggestions decide the menu?

Treat them as input for the meal team. Practical requirements and the school’s meal standards still need their own review.
