Ask employees whether pay structure, review timing, decision criteria, and confidential question routes are clear. Adapt the template with SurveyLegend.

When to use this template

Use this template when employees need a clearer explanation of how an existing compensation process works. It focuses on information, timing, criteria and question routes. It does not ask employees to disclose their pay or turn a feedback survey into a pay-equity audit.

What this template helps you decide

The questions show whether confusion sits in base-pay explanations, review timing, job factors, or the route for a confidential question. Keep broad employee engagement measurement separate so one page has one decision to support.

7 questions for your compensation clarity survey

How to customize this template

Replace general terms with the language your organization actually uses, and define which employees the process covers. State whether responses are anonymous or confidential and who can see them. Review the introduction against SurveyLegend’s survey ethics guidance. Do not promise a pay change, ask for salary amounts, or infer discrimination from this feedback alone; use qualified HR and legal review for formal pay-equity work.

How to interpret the responses

Separate “not sure” from negative ratings; uncertainty is itself a clarity signal. Compare items only at a group level that protects privacy, and do not publish small-group cuts that could identify people. Cullen and Perez-Truglia found employees could be “unwilling to reveal their salaries to coworkers and reluctant to ask coworkers about their salaries” in a salary information study . That supports a confidential question route, but the study does not validate this survey. Pair the most common unclear area with one concrete communication change and explain what will happen next.

Frequently asked questions

Should the survey ask for salary amounts?

No. This template is designed to find communication and process gaps without collecting individual pay. A pay-equity or market-benchmarking project needs a different, controlled data process.

Is anonymous participation important?

Sensitive employee feedback often benefits from anonymity. Explain the actual setup accurately, avoid tiny reporting groups, and never promise anonymity if the collection method can identify respondents.

Can this measure pay fairness?

It can show how employees understand and experience the process, but it cannot establish legal or statistical pay equity. Use compensation records and qualified analysis for that question.
