Keep the Question About the Space

Name the worksite or area and ask about the past four weeks. Explain who sees the results and how small groups will be protected. Offer a separate route for urgent hazards, maintenance requests and individual accommodations; routine survey comments should not be the only way to raise them. Invite on-site workers using different areas, and keep “did not work on site” visible.

What Research Can—and Cannot—Support

Kang, Ou and Mak analyzed survey responses from 231 people in open-plan research offices across 19 universities in China. Their abstract examines “layout, air quality, thermal comfort, lighting and acoustic environment.” Read the workspace study . Its narrow office setting and self-reports cannot prove a particular change will raise productivity elsewhere. This original SurveyLegend questionnaire asks about the same broad types of conditions but is not the study's validated instrument or a building inspection.

Turn Reports into a Facilities Check

Look at sound, temperature, air, lighting and layout separately and in the context of the work area. Do not calculate a productivity or safety score. Compare response patterns only where privacy and sample sizes allow it, then investigate with facilities staff and appropriate measurements. Is this a workplace safety inspection?

No. It gathers employee perceptions of routine physical conditions. Use the organization's monitored safety and maintenance channels for hazards and required checks.

Should remote workers answer?

They may choose the “did not work on site” option, but this version is designed for a named physical workplace. A home-workspace survey needs its own scope and privacy review.

Does the study prove better spaces increase productivity?
