This part-time job survey template asks current employees how their hours and scheduling process work for them. Explore advance notice, preferred hours, schedule changes, and access to the information needed to do the job.

Two people working the same number of hours may want different schedules. This SurveyLegend questionnaire asks about employees’ preferences instead of assuming that every part-time worker wants either more hours or fewer commitments.

When to use this survey

Use it with current part-time employees when the organization can act on scheduling or communication feedback. Before sending it, use survey testing to check that fixed-schedule and variable-schedule employees can both answer accurately.

Customize your part-time job survey

Include both fixed and changing schedules. Explain how suggestions will be reviewed and avoid implying that a preference guarantees a schedule change. Do not use answers to infer why someone works part-time. Ask about the scheduling process separately from formal availability requests.

Give employees a private way to return the same questionnaire across different shifts. Keep it separate from time sheets and attendance records. Do not ask a supervisor to watch employees complete it.

How to use the answers

Compare desired hours with schedule notice and changes. Do not assume everyone who works fewer hours wants more. Group open-ended data into notice, communication and handover needs. Review themes without publishing small groups that could expose an employee’s circumstances.

Liz Watson’s research report on low-wage hourly work distinguished “rigidity, unpredictability, and instability” as different scheduling challenges. The workplace flexibility research considered differences between part-time and full-time work. It informs the separation of notice, changes and preferred hours here; it does not imply that every part-time role has the same problems or validate this original questionnaire.

Frequently asked questions

Does this change an employee’s availability?

No. It collects general feedback. Keep the organization’s scheduling and availability process separate.

Should all part-time workers be assumed to want more hours?

No. The questionnaire includes fewer, the same and more hours, plus a changing-preference option.

Can employees with fixed schedules respond?

Yes. The first question includes an ongoing fixed-schedule option, and the remaining questions cover communication and preferences.
