Customize your virtual training survey

Name the session and date, and use terminology that matches its actual activities. Provide options for people who could not access the materials rather than recording their experience as low satisfaction. Explain a separate support channel for unresolved access problems. Use a different version for self-paced training because joining and live participation are not the same tasks.

How to use the answers

Review access problems before interpreting opinions about activities. Group open-ended data into joining, materials, practice and feedback issues. Decide whether the next step is technical support or a change in instruction. Satisfaction and reported usefulness do not show how much someone learned; use a suitable learning assessment separately.

Sitzmann and colleagues’ 2006 meta-analysis compared web-based and classroom instruction and examined instructional conditions, including when trainees “practiced the training material and received feedback”. The online instruction research informs the separate practice and feedback questions here. The review predates current platforms and does not establish the effectiveness of a particular live session or validate this original questionnaire.

Frequently asked questions

Should people who could not join receive it?

Yes, if they attempted to attend. Their access experience is useful, and they can skip questions about activities they did not experience.

Can this be used for a recorded course?

Adapt it substantially for self-paced access, navigation and available support. Questions about joining a live session would not fit.

Does a positive rating prove learning?

No. Feedback describes the experience. Use a suitable assessment or later application evidence to evaluate learning.
