How to adapt the questions

Adapt activities and settings to the age group and available opportunities. Do not turn the answer list into a hidden score. For written interests, use a transparent open-ended analysis method and keep minority interests visible.

Use a printable version

Use the printable version in a classroom, career fair or advising session when paper is more accessible. Let respondents keep a copy of their selected next step and store returned forms privately. The downloadable file must be the real blank questionnaire; paper answers are not automatically added to online results.

How to interpret responses

Look for combinations rather than a single winning answer: an activity, setting, outcome and feasible next step can form an exploration hypothesis. Alaee and Zwickl (2024) reported in a career interest study that “positive class experiences and experimental opportunities significantly impacted students’ interest” among 27 undergraduate physics majors. That finding supports asking about experiences and opportunities, but it cannot assign a career or generalize to every learner.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a career aptitude test?

No. It is an exploratory conversation starter. It does not measure aptitude, assign a personality type or recommend an occupation.

How is this different from a career path survey?

This template helps someone choose experiences to explore before selecting a path. A career path survey would plan progress toward a more defined role or direction.

Should one answer determine the next step?

No. Combine activity, setting, outcome, prior experience and access constraints, then offer more than one low-risk way to explore.
