This job search priority survey template helps adults explain what they want from a next role. Ask about the main priority, working arrangement, schedule, and information needed before deciding whether to apply.

Two job seekers may want the same job title for very different reasons. This SurveyLegend questionnaire gives a career adviser a starting point for a conversation about the conditions that matter to each person.

When to use this survey

Use it before a voluntary career-support meeting or as a personal planning exercise. Explain how answers will be used and keep them separate from an employer’s selection decision. If sharing an email survey , describe the support purpose clearly and avoid asking for sensitive employment records.

Customize your job search priority survey

Use the form to start a conversation, not to exclude someone from opportunities. Ask only for preferences relevant to the support being offered. Let people revise answers as they learn more about roles. Avoid asking why a person needs a schedule or location arrangement when that would invite unnecessary personal disclosures.

Provide the blank questionnaire before or during a career-support appointment. Give the person a chance to keep a copy for their own planning. Store any adviser notes through the support service’s established process rather than adding sensitive details to shared reports.

How to use the answers

Look at the main priority alongside the written conditions. A strong preference may be flexible in some circumstances and essential in others. Use open-ended data to organize questions for a follow-up conversation. Do not infer a reservation wage, predict job acceptance or rank employability from these answers.

Van Landeghem and colleagues’ 2024 choice experiment examined jobseekers’ preferences for “a variety of job attributes”, including flexibility and commuting. The job preference study supports discussing several conditions rather than assuming pay is the only consideration. Its Flemish employment-service sample and choice-experiment method differ from this original reflection form; the form does not estimate monetary trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a job seeker choose more than one priority?

This version asks for the main priority, then gives space to explain other conditions. Adapt the question if your conversation needs several priorities, and keep all formats consistent.

Is it suitable for rejecting applicants?

This template is for voluntary career planning. It is not a qualification assessment or an applicant-ranking instrument.

Will preferences stay the same throughout a search?

They may change as someone learns about roles and circumstances. Treat the answers as a current starting point and revisit them when useful.
