General

1. Okay, so what’s all this about?
It’s simple. We were fed up with online surveys that effectively put the user to sleep, so we built something new. SurveyLegend is a survey tool that approaches things differently by focusing on relaying information visually, prioritizing user experience, sharing and ease of use. Surveys are answered by selecting between images instead of text. Sometimes we really need to aggregate answers to questions we have to make good choices in day to day affairs.
2. Surveys are boring. You’re boring.
Traditional surveys of the pop-up-into-your-face variety are boring and annoying, yes. Especially for the end user, who’re put through page after page of questions. Removing the hassle from participating in a survey has been a big deal for us. That’s a good thing, not only for the person who donates their time to answer but for the creator. And to retort, we like fun as much as anybody else.
3. Pictures, like, with my eyes?
Yes, you are absolutely correct. SurveyLegend is a visual survey tool. Images convey information too: and we’ve spend a lot of time considering communication. When you participate in one of our surveys, the method of answering is simply selecting the image that seems most appropriate as a way of answer. It’s quick, effecient and a lot more interesting than having text unceremoniously dumped in front of you.
4. Pictures and surveys, I’m with you so far. But what can I do?
Beyond the actual process of creating a survey, you can collect e-mail and contact information from those who’re answering (voluntary, of course). You can put your own touch on things by branding your survey with an ad banner or campaign graphics - or offer rebate coupons or other relevant information. You can customize your survey so it fits into the environment you post it. And you can share it all via the usual social channels: Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin. Or plain embed it into a ordinary webpage or blog.
5. Is it really free? Are you hiding something?
Yes to the first question, no to the second. There is a somewhat limited free version supported by ads, and four additional payment plans that give you access to different features - it all depends on your needs.
6. I’m sold and can barely control my throes of excitement. How do I get in on this right away?
First take a deep breath. Then, direct your web browser of choice here. Simply pick your flavour of subscription, then start asking questions to your hearts content. Alternatively, take a gander at our charming tutorial video.
7. What gave you the idea?
It all began long ago, when- okay, it honestly wasn’t that long ago. SurveyLegend’s CEO and founder, Jasko Mahmutovic was then looking into establishing an online store but found current methods of staying up to date with customers and their interest in current inventory lacking. That’s where the idea of ‘quick, engaging’ polling came, which then exploded into the tool we’ve got today.
8. What’s up with the charming individual in dashing red cape?
It’s our mascot, colloquially known as the Legend. He/She’s sort of the embodiment of the company spirit, coming to the aid of everyone who’s ever sat through a full-length text survey and hated every minute of it.
9. What do all these different numbers mean on the Quick Compare? You’re confusing me.
It’s really uncomplicated, promise. The amount of responses and e-mail addresses you can collect in a survey is controlled by the kind of subscription you have. While Free allows you 100 answers, and 5 addresses, Business+ is completely unrestricted.
10. Collecting e-mail and geographic positioning sounds fishy to me. Will you send invisible helicopters to my house now?
No. There’s nothing to worry about. Paid subscriptions allow the survey creator the possibility to ask the participant for their contact information. Geographic positioning is used to create more relevant survey data and doesn’t contain any information that can be used to identify you. We take your privacy very, very seriously. Please don’t hesitate to mail us if you have any additional concerns.
11. I’m a big math geek. What about statistical validity?
Yes, we are too. Having proper sample groups is an important part of having statistically valid results - however, we’ve conceptualized our service as a way to conduct ad-hoc surveys, or surveys that are close in time and space to whatever topic is being investigated: think of it as checking the pulse on a current issue. Whether or not you’re interested in conducting a large survey in accordance with all the rules in the playbook is essentially up to you. As a service provider, we can’t take individual methodological quandaries into consideration, as it simply would require more resources than we have available to us.
12. What's all this about saving trees?
Basically, we do a rough calculation of the amount of electricity you save by not using a paper based survey. There’s no physical offset, but it’s an interesting indicator of how much of an impact using electronic alternatives can have. We essentially compared the electricity and material requirements of creating a paper survey in contrast with creating an electronic, web-based survey.

Survey Management

1. How do I create a survey?
After logging in, you are automatically directed to the first step of survey creation. Simply enter the desired name of your survey, make the appropriate layout choices and click “Create”. Click here to view a step-by-step video tutorial on the entire creation process.
2. I finished the first step of creating a survey but had to interrupt - how do I resume editing my started survey?
Presuming you clicked the “create” button after finishing naming and configuring your survey layout, your survey has been saved and may consequently be edited at any time. Existing surveys are located in the “Edit existing survey” list under the Edit tab. Should your survey not be listed and you feel you have taken the appropriate steps, please contact our customer support for assistance.
3. Can I remove a survey that I’ve already created and shared?
Yes. Select the survey your want to delete in the existing surveys list, select and click “Delete”. Your survey is now deleted. Please note that removing a survey will also invalidate links and HTML-integration.
4. How do I view the results of my survey?
While logged in to your account, direct your browser to the “Results” page. It can be accessed on the toolbar on the left-hand side of the tool.
5. Can I export the results?
SurveyLegend supports on-demand result data exporting to PDF, CSV and Excel. While logged in, click the “Export” link on the toolbar located on the left-hand side of the tool.
6. How do I share my survey?
There are several options available for sharing a survey.
7. What counts as an answer in a survey?
Any click on an answer button is registered as a vote, even if the participant closes the survey before completion. A “response” constitutes a finished survey, where the participant has voted on all the items in a survey.

Glossary

1. Third party ads
Ads supplied by a third party are displayed when visiting a hosted survey created under a Free account.
2. Incorporate own ads
When using a paid account, the ability to incorporate custom advertisement content in a survey is enabled. Additionally, any visitor viewing a hosted survey created under a paid account will not see any third-party ads.
3. Embed
Embed: to implant (an idea or feeling) so that it becomes ingrained within a particular context or in computing terms, to incorporate (a text or code) within the body of a file or document (Oxford English Dictionary). Simply put, embedding a survey into your web page or blog means to integrate it with your site so that it doesn’t stand out as being apart.
4. Share to social media
Sharing to social media simply involves spreading your current survey to social platforms you have an account with. Currently, SurveyLegend features integration with Facebook and Twitter, allowing you to directly post or tweet from within the tool itself. Sharing to other services such as Orkut, Linkedin or Diaspora involves linking to your hosted survey.
5. Response limitations
The amount of responses you can export and thus effectively “use” for practical purposes is subject to limits tied to account status. It helps to think of it in terms of available data: each payment tier “unlocks” additional respondent data. Don’t worry: all responses are always collected and saved, even when using a Free account - they just aren’t accessible yet.
6. E-mail limitations
The amount of contact information you can export and thus effectively “use” for practical purposes is subject to limits tied to account status. It helps to think of it in terms of available data: each payment tier “unlocks” additional respondent data. Don’t worry: all adresses are always collected and saved, even when using a Free account - they just aren’t accessible yet.
7. White label survey
White label surveys (accessible in Pro+ and Business+ accounts) are a “instant-on” feature that removes all SurveyLegend branding from your surveys, allowing you greater freedom in profiling yourself to visitors.
8. Picture based survey
SurveyLegend is a tool that allows you to create image-based surveys: questions are posed in text but answers are not, relying on images to convey the desired meaning. We believe that conveying information visually is beneficial: partly because it’s much faster than having to read a lot, and partly because it invokes and requires a different level of response and engagement with the participant.
